[Elias' home was a convenience. It was a luxury that he had a place to live peacefully, to study and go about his business, without any kind of negative interference. But in truth the house was just as much, if not more, the silver lady's than his own; he simply took up mutual residence. The house had been nothing. It had been the house that had felt so cold when Chise was away.
After a moment's pause:]
A person. I think.
I... apologize. This "loneliness" is quite undesirable.
[ She understands it at least, knowing that over half of her classmates were comatose back home, maybe never able to wake up. She doesn't know, she may never know now that she's been dragged here. ]
A friend? Family? I do not mind listening if you wish to speak. Loneliness is quite troublesome.
You have an apprentice? She must be very lucky. Though it is a shame to hear that. Do you believe she was kept behind? Sometimes there is no need to say anything, other than to find company in others to deal with it.
[Lucky... well, I suppose. With what she was, every magical being in the world would be interested in her, and many would be far more cruel and exploitative than Elias was. Outwardly, anyway. It was complicated.]
Mm. I took her in several months ago. And yes, she must have. I don't know why. It... makes me mistrustful and vexed at ALASTAIR. Really? And that helps?
[When he had felt lonely when Chise had been away with Lindel, there had been nothing he could do—the fire in the hearth had been useless, and the silver lady was pleasant, but not much for conversation.]
[ Hopefully none of that happens, though Sonia has no idea those are concerns either. ]
I can understand why. I am still uncertain of what they said about how we came to be here as being the truth. We have no proof either way. And how do you feel telling me this? Does it help?
[ She has to presume it does a little, but she doesn't know for sure. ]
It seems a running theme with them that they place groups of people unarmed with requisite information into dangerous situations.
[It's not the danger that bothers Elias, it's the lack of information. Alas.
There is a brief pause. He seems to be considering it before the reply comes.]
I don't believe it makes a difference. The world just feels—cold. Colder than normal.
[The conversation was helping with the mental frustration of not understanding what was happening to him, but no, it was not helping with the chill he felt, which Chise had told him was "loneliness." The only thing that had chased it away was when she had returned, wreathed in the flame of fiery fae, burning the air like a phoenix.
[ She knows she would have felt a little safer even if they'd given her a baseball bat, but she arrived with nothing but the clothes on her back and the two fuzzy little hamsters that she'd been taking care of. ]
I suppose we are not close enough for that, it makes sense. I am not saying that this would replace your apprentice either, but does it help your thoughts?
[ It must be strange to be suddenly wondering all this stuff anyway. ]
[He might've been tempted to laugh. If he was one for things like that.]
I assure you, Princess Sonia, I can defend myself.
[He would prefer if he did not. Depending on the severity of the situation, it could get... disturbing.]
That's a factor? How do you know how close you are with someone? She had been living with me for some months but the silver lady had been living in the house even before I arrived, and the silver one's company is far different...
Possibly... The thoughts don't make much sense to me, but I think the talking is helping me understand, if not just a little.
[Regardless of how ancient he seemed sometimes, when it came to emotions, he was still basically a little kid.]
It isn't a measure of time, but how much care and attention that you pay towards someone. This apprentice of yours must have taken more of your attention than the silver lady. That is why you would not miss this lady as much as your apprentice.
[ At least, that is what she thinks given what he's told her thus far. ]
There is no need to apologize, princess. I am sure I could have worded it better.
[Admittedly he's getting used to the whole "thoughts turning directly into text" thing...]
I... see. I believe you are right. She certainly did require more of my attention, as I needed to see to her safety and her education. I must admit I have concerns for both of these things, now that we are separated. Yes, this makes sense. Thank you for taking the time to explain.
[Many human nobles were very persnickety about titles and ranks. The fae were even worse. He's moderately relieved to see Sonia is not so strict.]
Likewise, should you ever need my assistance or fear for yourself while you are here, do not hesitate to let me know. I would be pleased to return this favor that you have extended.
That is correct. It is difficult to say without the right equipment, but approximately that size. Did you come to some kind of conclusion with that information?
I was doing a little investigating among the Qorral to determine who else might be infected. I ran into one gentleman. One that I know had violent intent. One that didn't interact with anyone else, and ran when I went after him.
Wish I got a good look at him, but I can sketch out what I did see.
Sheriff said that he joined the Deemers a few months back, so it's pretty clear to me that he's been infected with one of the Taraxa. Another local said that they remember seeing him out by the saloon during the night of the fire.
It's sounding like he was responsible for the fire, if you ask me. Maybe they were trying to cover their tracks.
In any case, hopefully this info can help out. I'll give you the sketch I drew out, if you want.
It seems like a good connection to follow up, though it may also be a red herring. I am aware people are trying to track Miz Poppy as well, do you think the two are connected?
If you give me a sketch I can try and walk around and ask if anyone has seen that person.
